A solo female motorcycle rider @meikehijman (Instagram account) based in the Netherlands has sparked widespread debate online by uploading a video from rural Haryana, which showed a surprising act of hospitality during her motorcycle journey in India. The solo female rider uploaded a video where she could be seen asking a village family whether she could spend a night in their garden. Considering that she was travelling alone through an unknown area, the mere act of asking for permission seemed quite audacious. What ensued thereafter, however, was something else.Having resolved the language barrier with the help of @tushargujjar8679 who just happened to pass by, instead of any hostility, the family appeared to have accepted her with open arms. The entire exchange, although brief, became a touching instance of a host welcoming her guests while traveling solo on a road trip. In the caption accompanying the post, she thanked the hosts directly, writing: “Big thanks to @tushargujjar8679 and his family for hosting me!!”In no time at all, this video was getting millions of views, including very intriguing comments, which highlighted the generous nature and open-heartedness of the Haryana family to a complete stranger.Commenting on this video, one individual said that the act of the host has made the whole of India proud, and that this family has shown the other travelers that there is another beautiful aspect to this nation that they can experience. To many, this video served as proof that traveling memories aren’t made of just monuments and tourist spots..

Another user commented in Hindi: “जाटों के गाँव और घर में आप सुरक्षित हैं डरने की कोई बात नही है, Welcome to India.” (Jaato ke gaon me aap surakshit hain, darne ki koi baat nahi hai) The line translates to: “In Jat villages and homes, you are safe, there is nothing to fear. Welcome to India.” The remark reflected the pride some viewers felt in seeing rural communities represented positively online. However, while the hospitality shown in the video earned applause, there emerged a corresponding discussion concerning safety and risk, especially for solo women travellers.

Some viewers suggested that although things had gone well in this particular instance, outdoor camping could sometimes present certain risks for travellers. One user wrote that camping outside was not safe and urged travellers to check crime rates and local conditions before visiting remote places, adding that the Dutch rider had been lucky to meet a kind family. On a rather emotional note, another commenter expressed that, unfortunately, India is unsafe for solo women travellers, and that too solo campers. The commenter advised staying in a hotel or homestay, saying that while the family in the video appeared kind-hearted, the risk involved was too high to encourage others to do the same. Some responses took a humorous turn. One user joked, “That’s what East India Company said the same thing around 300 years ago,” referencing colonial history while reacting to the traveller’s request for shelter. This conflicting opinion makes the video more significant as a piece than just another travel vlog. The video has become a discussion of how India appears to foreigners and what its locals think of themselves as well as what it is like traveling alone as a woman in a country of wonder and intrigue. Some people take comfort in the fact that such an act of kindness can be experienced even in times like these. Others argue that while a single good incident should not overshadow all concerns about their safety, one must appreciate the small gestures. In any case, an overnight stay at a Haryana village seems to have made more of an impact than anyone could have predicted. In an era filled with glossy travel videos on social media, a mere exchange of pleasantries among strangers stands out to capture more of our attention than we bargained for.
