Who is Amit Kshatriya? Indian-American Nasa official behind historic Moon mission

Indian-American space scientist Amit Kshatriya holds a senior leadership position at Nasa, an agency that has recently completed the Artemis II mission, a significant step in its renewed human lunar exploration programme. The Artemis II mission, a crewed lunar flyby, concluded with astronauts returning safely after a splashdown off the coast of San Diego, California at 8:07 am Eastern Time on Friday, marking a key milestone in Nasa’s space missions.Kshatriya serves as Nasa’s associate administrator and senior advisor to administrator Jared Isaacman. In remarks after the mission, he said the progress reflected both achievement and the scale of future work. “The path to the Moon is open, but the work ahead is greater than the work behind,” he said.Born in Brookfield, Wisconsin and raised in Katy, Texas, Kshatriya developed an early fascination with space through rocket launches observed near Houston, home to Nasa’s Johnson Space Centre. The son of first-generation Indian immigrants, he studied mathematics at the California Institute of Technology and the University of Texas at Austin. He began his career outside Nasa in sectors including oil and gas and healthcare before joining Nasa’s contractor ecosystem in 2003. Over time, he worked in spacecraft operations, robotics engineering, and International Space Station assembly support. His roles at Nasa have included serving as an ISS flight director between 2014 and 2017, overseeing mission execution and global operations. He later handled responsibilities linked to station systems and engineering logistics before moving to NASA Headquarters in 2021 to contribute to the Artemis programme and lunar exploration planning. He was later appointed Deputy Associate Administrator for the Moon to Mars programme and subsequently elevated to Associate Administrator in September last year, the agency’s senior civil service position.Kshatriya has been recognised with honours including the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal and the Silver Snoopy Award for contributions to flight safety. With Artemis II completed, NASA’s focus is expected to remain on advancing its lunar exploration roadmap and preparing for future deep space missions under the Artemis programme.
